One of the scourges of urban pollution is oxygen (O2) depletion caused by automobile and truck engines, people, and industrial processes. Oxygen content is severely depleted in many cities, especially on high smog days, whereas in nature, clean air at sea level is about 21% oxygen. The EPA in Sept, 2002 issued a health advisory that statistical data revealed a geometric increase in heart attacks on high smog days, very evidently linked to abnormally low O2 levels. The oxygen in Earth's atmosphere is produced by plants. The major sources of oxygen generation are tropical rain forests, taiga forests, and phytoplankton in the oceans. In biblical times, the oxygen content of Earth's atmosphere was about 30% (35% according to research data from a Canadian university). Humans were designed to breathe air with a 30% oxygen content. But, in the early 19th century, the industrial revolution triggered enormous consumption of oxygen by machinery. Then, in the 20th century, the invention of antibiotics dramatically lowed mortality rates and the global population exploded, now estimated to be 6 billion people. Nitrogenous fertilizer run-off from farms causes algal blooms in the oceans which kill the oxygen producing plants. An apoxic dead zone, completely devoid of oxygen in the water, covers over half of the Gulf of Mexico this summer, resulting in massive fish-kills and forcing fish near the shore, where breaking waves oxygenate the water. Sharks follow the bait-fish and attack swimmers. Rain forests are being clear-cut and then burned. Every day the oxygen content of Earth's atmosphere gradually diminishes as more oxygen is being consumed than produced. Since 1970 the oxygen content in Earth's atmosphere has fallen from 21% to the present day global average, estimated by some researchers, to be 16%. It is tragic. Casa da Vida can maintain up to a 30% oxygen content in any building in any urban environment in a hyperbaric environment. By increasing barometric pressure to 1.2 to 1.3 atmospheres, called mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy or m HBOT, oxygen infuses into the tissues at an increased rate bringing many healthful benefits. mHBOT There are more cases of asthma in the US than any other illness, and the quorum of the world's leading medical research institutions have concluded that this exponential increase in asthma cases is fundamentally attributed to indoor air pollution. Additionally, lung disease is the third leading cause of death in the US. The average person spends 12 or more hours per day inside their house. When combined with the hours spent inside their workplace, over 90% of each day is spent indoors. Breathing polluted air. Air containing mold, mildew, pollen, house dust, animal dander, dust mites, cigarette smoke, cockroach proteins, fumes from household chemicals, paint, insecticides, cooking odors, perfumes, automatic dishwasher chemicals, even chlorine and fluorine gasses from hot showers and laundry. Everything found in the outside gets indoors where it stagnates. And every time your air conditioner or heater cycles on it blows all these contaminated particulates around your house. While you're sleeping. While your immune system is at its weakest, typically between 2 AM and 4AM. Breathing this polluted indoor air stresses the immune system and makes one hyper-sensitive to allergens, so then when you go for a stroll in the park and stop to smell a flower, your allergies go crazy. The fresh air and the flower are blamed, but they're simply a symbol of the true culprit-and that culprit is indoor air pollution, primarily mold. The nasal, bronchial, and ear congestion caused by allergic reactions set the stage for secondary bacterial infections. A study by the Mayo Clinic said " almost all chronic sinus infections suffered by nearly 40 million people in the United States were attributable to molds. More recent studies show that mold also parallels the huge asthma rate increase of the past two decades." And the main cause of hearing loss is the result of childhood ear infections caused by allergies, mainly mold exposure. Certain species of molds, such as aspergillus, penicillium, stachybotrys, fusarium, and cladisporium, are extremely poisonous to humans and thrive in conditions found inside many houses. All it takes is moisture for explosive infestation of these "black molds"- their spores are blown widespread. There are over 20,000 species of molds, some are relatively benign, some are toxic to the point of being fatal, and the glucans- proteins found in the cell wall of molds- are extremely allergenic. And not all toxic molds are "black." The inhalation of mold spores and mycotoxins, the poisons given off by toxic molds, cause a myriad of illnesses and are the leading cause of asthma, allergies, tinnitus, and hearing loss. They have also been identified in Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), lupus, cancer, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, Epstein-Bar, heart disease, lung disease, neurological ailments, and multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS). "Black molds" produce these mycotoxins and enzymes to eliminate competition from bacteria. That is evidenced by the fact that many of the leading antibiotics, such as penicillin, are derived from molds. These mycotoxins are alkaloid compounds which cause severe and sometimes fatal neurological damage in humans, such as: ergotism from eating molded grain (LSD is derived from ergot) and; tinnitus from nerve damage. Aspergillus exposure causes infection of the anterior and posteria chambers of the eye and can lead to blindness, can cause inflammatory diseases in lungs and other organs, and can cause fungus balls, known as mycetoma, to form in the lungs or other organs. Disseminated aspergilloses is a rare, acute and usually fatal infection that produces Septicemia, Thrombosis, and can affect virtually any organ, but especially the heart, lungs, brain, and kidneys. It is not possible to build conventional houses that are hypo-allergenic, nor to fully remediate existing houses, although the CVI EnviroConditioner provides the best indoor air quality possible for bioremediations.
